Why Deliver It Intravenously

Anything taken by mouth has to pass through the digestive system before it reaches the bloodstream, and how much arrives varies — between nutrients and between people. Fluids and nutrients given intravenously skip that step entirely and are available to the body straight away.

That is why IV hydration is used when someone needs fluid quickly: after heat exposure, a hard workout, or an illness that has left them depleted. It is also why vitamin infusions such as the Myers’ Cocktail are given this way rather than as a handful of tablets.

Having it done in a medical practice means the infusion comes with the checks it should. Your provider knows your history and your medications before anything is started, and the person looking after you during the infusion is trained to do so.

If you are not sure which of the infusions suits you, ask. That conversation is part of the appointment.

What to Expect

Your provider reviews your health history and current medications and talks through which infusion you are having and what is in it. Some heart and kidney conditions, and some medications, affect whether an infusion is suitable, so mention anything you are unsure about.

A small flexible cannula is placed in a vein, usually in the arm. That is the only part most people notice — it feels much like having blood drawn. Once it is in, the infusion runs on its own while you sit back, read or use your phone.

A cool feeling along the arm is common as the fluid runs. If anything feels uncomfortable or unusual, tell the staff member with you straight away rather than waiting until the end.

When the infusion is finished the cannula is removed, a small dressing goes on, and you can return to your day.

Common questions

Anything not answered here is worth asking at your consultation.

Which infusion should I choose?
Simply Hydrate is fluid for rehydration; the Myers’ Cocktail adds magnesium, calcium, vitamin C and B vitamins; After Party combines hydration, vitamin C and B-complex with one medication for headache or nausea. Your provider can help you decide.
Does it hurt?
Only the cannula going in, which is similar to a blood draw. The infusion itself is not painful.
Can I add anything to my infusion?
A glutathione push can be added to the Myers’ Cocktail, as listed on the menu above. Ask your provider about anything else.
Is IV therapy right for everyone?
No. Some heart, kidney and other conditions, and some medications, make an infusion unsuitable. That is why your history is reviewed before anything is started.
Can I drive afterwards?
Yes. No sedation is involved, and there is no recovery period.
