About Microneedling with RF

Microneedling is a minimally invasive facial treatment that encourages the natural rejuvenation and anti-aging processes of your skin while injecting serum to encourage collagen and elastin growth.

The advanced surgical device used ensures precise punctures with the necessary depth and speed needed to target collagen growth in specific areas of the face.

Microneedling is best used on those with healthy skin and no current acne. The tiny, sterile needles puncture the skin repeatedly, triggering a healing response. Patients may return to activities the next day. Redness is the most common side effect. Dryness, stinging, and tingling are also reported.

Microneedling is used to treat the appearance of:

  • Acne scars
  • Age spots
  • Large pores
  • Minor scars
  • Stretch marks
  • Burns
  • Freckles

Results peak around 4-6 months, with the newly built collagen lasting for years. Most patients come back every few months for microneedling sessions.

Why Collagen Is the Target

Collagen is the protein that gives skin its firmness, and elastin is what lets it spring back. Both decline steadily from your twenties onward, and the visible consequences — skin that creases more easily, pores that look larger, a general loss of tautness along the jaw and cheeks — are downstream of that decline.

Creams cannot meaningfully replace them, because the layer where collagen is produced sits below where a topical product reaches. Treatments that do work on this layer all share a principle: create a controlled, survivable injury, and let the healing response build new tissue.

Combining needling with radiofrequency does this at two levels at once. The needles create the micro-channels; the radiofrequency delivers heat at a controlled depth, which contracts existing collagen and stimulates the production of more. The intended result is skin that is firmer and more even in texture, rather than skin that merely looks temporarily plumper.

Because it works by remodeling rather than filling or relaxing, it addresses something neither neurotoxin nor filler does. Many people use it alongside both.

What to Expect

Numbing cream is applied first and left for a period before treatment begins, which is the longest part of the appointment. The handpiece is then passed over the treatment area, with needle depth and energy adjusted for the region being treated and for what is being addressed.

Most people describe a hot, prickling sensation rather than sharp pain. Immediately afterwards the skin is red and feels warm and tight, similar to sunburn. That settles substantially within a day or two, though some pinpoint marks and mild swelling can persist a little longer.

Aftercare matters here more than with injectables. The skin barrier has been deliberately breached, so it needs to be kept clean and simple — no active ingredients, no makeup for the period you are advised, and diligent sun protection. Sun exposure on freshly treated skin risks pigmentation.

A course is normally planned with several weeks between sessions, because the point is to let each round of collagen remodeling complete before prompting the next. You will not see the full benefit of a course until months after the last appointment.

Common questions

Anything not answered here is worth asking at your consultation.

How many sessions will I need?
It is planned as a course rather than a single treatment, and the number depends on what is being addressed and how your skin responds. Your provider will set out a plan at your consultation.
Is there downtime?
Some. Expect redness and a sunburned feeling for a day or two, and possibly mild swelling and pinpoint marks a little beyond that. Most people plan treatment for a time when they can be low-key for a couple of days.
Does it hurt?
Numbing cream is applied first, and with it most people find the treatment tolerable — usually described as hot and prickling. Tell your provider if it is too uncomfortable; settings can be adjusted.
Can it be done on darker skin?
Because the energy is delivered below the skin surface rather than being absorbed by pigment at the surface, it is generally suitable across a wider range of skin tones than light-based resurfacing. Your provider will assess your skin at consultation.
When will I see results?
Not immediately. New collagen forms over weeks and months, so the change is gradual and continues well after your final session.
What do I need to avoid afterwards?
Active skincare ingredients, makeup for the period you are advised, heat and heavy sweating, and above all sun exposure. Sun protection is not optional after this treatment.

Terms you may hear

Radiofrequency (RF)
Energy delivered as heat at a controlled depth in the skin, used here to contract existing collagen and stimulate new production.
Collagen
The structural protein that gives skin its firmness. Production declines with age, which is what remodeling treatments aim to counter.
Micro-channels
The tiny controlled punctures created by the needles, which trigger the skin's repair response.
Skin laxity
Loss of firmness and tautness, as distinct from lines or volume loss.
